The Roller Coaster and the Trip to McDonald's
Mr. and Mrs. Thibodeau took their sons, 14-year old Evan and 9-year old Michael, to the amusement park. Michael loved to do everything his big brother did, but on this occasion he wasn't able to. When the brothers entered the line to the roller coaster, there was a sign that said, "You must be at least this tall to ride." The line which was drawn 54" above the ground, came up to Evan's eyes, but stood three or four inches above his little brother. Although Michael looked sad, his big brother just laughed and said, "You go wait with Mom and Dad. I'm going to ride." |
Throughout the day, the brothers shared several rides, but at some rides, a red line allowed one brother to pass but forbade the other brother to enter. Time after time, Evan made it worse by saying something like, "Maybe next year, little man!"
About an hour before the park closed, Dad said, "Let's go. I'm hungry and the food
in here is expensive. His wife and sons were more than ready to get dinner, and they barely left the park before finding a very large McDonald's. Michael ate quickly and asked if he could go into the Play Place. At first his father said "no," but his mother spotted the sign at the entrance to the room. She said, "I think that is a great idea.
Go ahead, and take your time."
The boys walked quickly to the Play Place entrance, where they too saw the sign.
It read, "For the safety of young patrons, you may not be any taller than this line
to enter." Just as it was at the park, the line stood 54" above the floor. Michael
turned to his brother, grinned, and said, "You go wait with Mom and Dad. I'm
going to be a while."
How tall is 54"?
Use the variable e (as in Evan) to write an inequality which shows who is allowed to ride the roller coaster.
Use the variable m (as in Michael) to write an inequality which shows who is allowed to enter the Play Place.
